About The Dunbar Center

A cornerstone of the South Side
Founded in 1918 as a settlement house for the city’s Black community, Dunbar has always been more than a building — it’s been a place of belonging, resilience, and opportunity. Generations of families have relied on Dunbar for guidance, support, and a sense of community, and many who grew up here now return as leaders, mentors, and board members.
Today, Dunbar continues to meet the needs of the community with a focus on youth, seniors, and families. After-school and summer programs give kids a safe, engaging place to learn and grow. Seniors gather for meals, wellness activities, and daily connection. Families turn to Dunbar’s food pantry and diaper bank for essential support during hard times. Alongside these programs, the Center also fosters dialogue and leadership through initiatives like SCORE, where teens lead conversations on race and equity. Whether it’s providing resources, nurturing leaders, or simply creating a safe space to gather, Dunbar remains what it has always been: a trusted home for the South Side, rooted in history and working for a stronger future.
